The book was an incredible read. I found myself fascinated with the Bronia's story, I couldn't put the book down.
I enjoyed the author's honesty, but I did not like the lengthy introduction and I felt like the author skimmed over some really important events and information. The book describes the authors personal experience with the horrors of the holocaust, but the book fell short in its descriptions and I never felt like I got to know anything about her family. I know this book is meant for middle grade students, but sadly, although this is an important story, this book is not very engaging and will not hold a young reader's attention.
The Girl Who Survived is a true autobiography about an eleven year-old girl who survived the Holocaust. It tells the story of her child life, the Holocaust, and then her adult life. When Jaworzno was taken over by Nazi troops, Bronia (the author and main character) has to smuggle out sheets of cloth to sell and get food for her family. She was nine years old at the time. When Bronia was eleven, she, her parents, and her brother were rounded up by the Nazis. Bronia managed to escape but her parents and brother were taken. For a while, She, her two younger sisters, and her older sister Mila lived by themselves. They weren't free from the Nazi's yet.
The Nazis took their small family and sent them to Auschwitz, one of the worst concentration camps. When they arrived, hey were sorted into two groups. Who was going to die and who was going to be sent to work. Bronia and her two younger sisters were sent into one group and her sister Mila into another. She knew that while she stayed in her group she would've died so quickly she darted over into Mila's group. The Nazi who was in charge didn't say anything because they were all going to die one way or another.
While Bronia was in Auschwitz, she got sick many times but it was never fatal. Mila on the other hand had gotten horribly sick and was sent to the gas chambers but Bronia was not by herself. She had befriended a woman named Bozenka who treated her like her daughter. Bronia came down with typhus later on because of the conditions in Auschwitz. She was so weak that she could barley speak let alone stand up. Bozenka told her to tell the Nazi to take her off the list. If he didn't she would be taken to the gas chambers. Amazingly he did.
The war was nearing an end and the Nazi's decided to get rid of all the evidence. They still had thousands of prisoners left and with no way of disposing them all, they decided to make them walk until they dropped. Bronia was only eleven and couldn't keep up with the group. Instead of letting her walk, Bozenka carried her almost the whole way. They walked to another work camp in which Bronia and Bozenka both survived.
Finally when the camp was liberated Bronia had nowhere else to go. So Bozenka became her "parent" and they both lived together in Czechoslovakia. Bronia was then fourteen years old. They lived together for a while before she found out that one of her brothers was still alive. She went to go stay with him and some distant relatives. Bronia then lived on to get married and have kids. Against all odds, she survived.
Overall, this book is like many many other books about the Holocaust. But then again the Holocaust was the same system of murder and work so there are bound to be thousands of books like it. The Holocaust was a terrible and sad event that people who weren't there won't ever be able to comprehend. This book does do a good job of describing the events that took place.
This book tells Bronia's story as her Jewish family was captured by the Nazis during World War II. Some were murdered, some were sent to concentration camps; Bronia herself was supposed to go in the line for the gas chambers, but she scooted over to follow her sister toward life.

Bronia was only a child, but her spunk and the kindness of others helped her survive.

I liked the book, but I "only" gave it a 4 because I have read many of these WWII/holocaust/Nazi books, and this one is typical to the rest. Horrible, for sure; awful, for sure; but still similar. The book has an Accelerated Reader level of 6.3. For some readers, it will be dry, boring, and slow. There are very few if any dialogs or excitement. You just read it. But it will raise questions in your mind Can this happen anymore? Do/Did any Nazi torturers ever feel regret? Could I survive all this?
