I tried twice to complete this book but never seem to make it pass the 60% mark. I finally succeeded in doing so after downloading the audio option.

Not sure what Bakker intended when he wrote this. If he intended to write a philosophy textbook, then he deserves 5 stars, otherwise 2 stars is very generous.

As a reader of the preceding books in the series, I was severely disappointed by :

The constant ruminating of the characters
The fussiness in enumerating the detail of each setting
The overly prolonged background stories
The poor separation of flashbacks from present day
The introduction so many new characters in a series thats more than 4 books old.

Overall this book was written as a movie script with more attention paid to world building than the actual continuation of once great series.

I've read every book in the series to date. All of them have been at least a little tedious to me compared to other authors I enjoy. But the story and characters always helped me push through. This book in my opinion was the worst in the series. A very slow read that only pushed my interest away from the entire story.
I loved the first trilogy, but so far have been disappointed by the second. The third book in the trilogy is the worst yet for me. While the story arc still interests me, the individual character arcs have gotten a little jumbled amid the jazzy, almost psychedelic, style of writing that effuses this book. Everyone and everything is going mad, and the writing style does such a good job of evoking this that it's a chore to decipher and follow the threads of what is actually happening. While I think this works for some scenes, overall it takes away from what should be a climactic ending to the second leg of this epic. Bakker's writing, in my opinion, has been rough from the beginning, but his story and characters make up up for that usually. I didn't find that to be the case in this installment. I will absolutely read the final books of this epic, but I sincerely hope that Bakker improves his writing style.
this series has lost its way, its now a chaotic writer like he's in mushrooms, nothing makes sense, all characters are doomed, and pretty much who cares if they save the world or not, as living under aspect emperor or mandate pretty much sucks, unless the inchoria win and kill everyone, loved books 1-3, 4 was ok, 5 i did not like, and 6 is a total loser
This series and the preceding trilogy ( The Darkness that Comes Before The Prince of Nothing, Book One (The Prince of Nothing) (The Prince of Nothing Series 1) ) are my favorite stories I've ever read. I'm 46 and grew up reading Herbert, Tolkien, etc.. whom I love, but my reading of fantasy trailed off as I got older. Very few contemporary stories even come close to that league. Scott Bakker's stories have exceeded those greats (especially for adult readers). Take a moment to let that sink in. I do not make that statement lightly. And they stand far above any contemporary authors which which I am familiar (including everyone's favorite benchmark, R.R. Martin; who's stories are fun but not nearly as ambitious as Bakker, IMHO.

Fascinating ideas and characters, an exciting plot and tight, well-crafted prose that has continued to improve with every book. Buy it. It has almost nothing in common with other books in this sales silo (a good thing in my opinion). This level of work should be promoted and rewarded.

The great ordeal picks up where the white luck warrior left off. There's another underground 2 underground treks in their book, a bizzare Magic helmet, a crazy child doing crazy things, and Kelhus ex machina at one point. Way way too much philosophizing about the nature of being and mind and the history of the Nonmen.

There are also slaughter and magic and seized and betrayals. So that's good.

It definitely sets up the continuation of the series and advanced plot but I find I care less about most characters than I used to.
I've read all of Bakker's stories re the Prince of Nothing & Aspect Emperor. Without question, it's an excellent set of stories. The world is brilliantly developed, the magic systems are unique, the character development is thorough. All in all, very good stuff.

However...

I'm not sure Bakker is aware to any degree of how he uses italicization throughout his story line. It's positively distracting. Like Terry Pratchett and his interminable footnotes and David Weber's use of the phrase "at any rate", Bakker uses italicized words and phrases way too much. Thing is, the story is good enough to carry most, if not all, of what he's trying to emphasize without needing to italicize. You'd think a good editor would've caught it.

Other than that criticism, truly good stuff.
Having read all of Bakker's other novels set in Eärwa, this is the only one I'd rate less than 5 stars. I have no problem with the direction he's taken the story; I enjoy the plot immensely. Where I think this book goes wrong is Bakker's imagination has outstripped his narrative/descriptive ability. Or perhaps it's outstripped the English language since he's a formidable writer. This book just lacks the narrative flow of his past work.

Still, am looking forward to the next thing he writes more than any other author I read.
