This book is a lot of fun. The resident seven-year-old used this for her nightly reading and simply didn't want to stop. She found it absolutely hilarious.

Parent perspective The book was well written, humorous, and had some good lessons about bullying. Note that the story didn't suffer for the messaging. While the message was definitely there, it wasn't in your face and didn't detract at all. The vocabulary was very age appropriate as well.

All in all a very well written and funny book that my daughter thoroughly enjoyed!
Cute and funny little book. While some reviewers mentioned that the behavior of some characters was questionable, I look at that as an opportunity to discuss the correct behavior models with the children after reading them the book. Sometimes, books can lead to great family discussions and lessons that come across as natural and that children will remember. If you are into minimalism, you might find the overall message of getting lots of stuff to be upsetting. Kids will relate to the idea of wanting everything, and again, that's a good lesson too. Fun characters and lots of great family interaction.
My ten year old daughter and I enjoyed this book. It was fun for her. It was fun just to imagine the prize of getting to pick out stuff from a store. I liked the different characters. It was a good read for her. I find a lot of books are dark nowadays, even children's books, so it was nice to read one that was light and fun.

I also felt that the book had some good messages, which I like in books. It helped with dealing with bullies and can be a bridge to discussing it with them. Overall, my child liked it and so did I.
My 9 year old really enjoyed this book. She read it on her own the first time through, and she said that it was very descriptive and fun for all ages. She said it was exciting because nobody expects anything that is going to happen in the book. The story involves a family competition
which involves three challenges. If they win, they get to go into a grocery store and grab whatever they can in ten minutes.

The family members are all different. Cal is outgoing, his mom is all about fitness, his sister is really smart, and his dad is a newspaper writer. My daughter said she enjoyed reading about how the different members of the family interacted with each other.

She actually enjoyed it so much, that she's now reading it to her 5-year-old brother. I'm not sure how much of it he's understanding, but they are enjoying the time together.
I read the book with my 10 year old son. I forgot how much I enjoyed reading as a child.
Yes, Bill is my brother, and I recommend all of his books to my friends with kids. And to hear their kids talk about this latest one, and how they can work together and get things done...well, it's just plain awesome! When I thank my friends for giving Bill's books to their kids, they say "No! Thank you! They loved them!"
Thoroughly enjoyable book with great characters and a fun plot! Kids will definitely enjoy rooting for the Talaska family, and it's a feel-good ending that leaves you hoping for a sequel. Try this book if your kids are weary of the same-old books that have been on the shelves for years-- this book will grab and keep their attention for sure!
